Butterfly valves are most commonly used to isolate or regulate flow. Similar to a globe valve the closing mechanism is in the form of a disc, however butterfly valves are generally much more lightweight and therefore require less support in addition to having a lower cost. They also use an operating principal that allows for a fast shut off, similar to a ball valve. The disc is positioned in the centre of the pipe and is always present within the flow which means that a pressure drop is always induced in the flow by the valve, regardless of the valves positioning.
